PA 1969 - Museums & Libraries for Democracy
As our class's most influential federal official in the time
leading to the end of his four-year term this spring, Crosby Kemper has guided
America's largest cultural institution, the Institute of Museum and Library
Services. As its director--appointed by the President and confirmed by
the Senate--he presided annually over the distribution of hundreds of millions
of dollars, more than either the National Endowment for the Arts or the
National Endowment for the Humanities. Crosby has taken a key role in reviving,
at the direction of Joe Biden, the President's Committee on the Arts and
Humanities, which was killed by Donald Trump in 2017. From his institute's
vantage, Crosby can engage us all in a discussion of democracy's strivings
through difficult days.

PA 1969 - War and Peace
At Andover in 1969, we all had to
register for the draft. Our nation was at war in Vietnam, a conflict that
bitterly divided the country and many of us opposed. Fifty-five years later,
from the perspective of our varied careers and life experiences since then, we
would like to discuss together that most human of activities: war. The
panel will feature Evan Thomas, David Ensor, and
Leigh Haffrey.

PA 1969 - The Windows of Visibility
Conversation led by Andrew “Beau” Watson.
Life requires sensing, and for humans vision has evolved into our most profuse source of information about the outside world. It begins with a near-miracle: the capture and sorting of a small handful of the sea of photons flowing about us. It proceeds through a fantastic machine — the visual brain — that converts that retinal image into an understanding of the surfaces, objects, materials, and activities that surround us. And of course, through the identification of symbols, vision also enables our understanding of activities far from us, in both space and time, experienced by others. But vision is limited, in ways that shape our perceptual experience. In this talk I will discuss some of those limitations, and how they also shape the design of modern visual displays.
